You Won’t Remember, But I Will…

Earlier this year, a post by Jessica Dimas caught the motherhood community by storm. It was a beautifully written piece on memories she will never forget as a new mom. Here is my rendition of “You Won’t Remember, But I Will…”

You won’t remember the late nights lying in bed feeling your soft kicks inside my tummy, worrying if I would be good enough for you, but I will.

You won’t remember with each passing day, my belly getting bigger and bigger with you growing more and more, but I will.

You won’t remember the first pain of labor, excited that my body is getting ready for you, but I will.

You won’t remember the hospital room crowded with family anxious to meet you, but I will.

You won’t remember the way your precious heartbeat on the monitor dropped, scaring your daddy and I, but I will.

You won’t remember getting flipped around in my belly by the doctor attempting to put you into position to meet you, but I will.

You won’t remember the first time your daddy and I heard your scream over the blue OR curtain and fell in love, but I will.

You won’t remember the first time your daddy caught a glimpse of your lovely face and exclaimed over and over, “Look how beautiful he is!” but I will.

You won’t remember the first time your daddy held you, bundling you close, and walking you to the OR table so I could meet you, breathing, “Look what we made,” but I will.

You won’t remember the way I first held you in my arms while your little mouth searched for food, forever creating a permanent bond between you and I, but I will.

You won’t remember how excited we were to take you home from the hospital that warm October day and care for you on our own, but I will.

You won’t remember mommy staring at you while sleeping, memorizing every inch of your face, praying you won’t grow up too fast, but I will.

You won’t remember the first time those lips of yours crept up and created a toothless grin, but I will.

You won’t remember the nights you and I are the only ones awake in the whole house, me holding you close, but I will.

You won’t remember me nursing you in the back of the car on one of my work breaks when you looked at me like I was the best thing in your life, but I will.

You won’t remember these little moments, but I always will.
